Not worth the time or money.Once you become a parent, your days of leaving the house with a small purse holding only a wallet, keys and phone are pretty much over. ![]() ![]() ![]() But our meetings are not virtual, the learning and training we provide are actual, and the interactions we have online are real. We may meet in a virtual room or craft products on a virtual platform. Instead, the word should reflect the objects that are really virtual. I’m not suggesting that we can’t use the word at all. To Sum UpĪnd a special note to those that are saying but some things ARE virtual. By reframing the language we use, we can help to reshape the preconceived notion that online interactions are not actual. It’s not wishing we could do this in person, it’s delighting in the potential to reach people through the internet or device. It’s not converting in-person content, it's developing online experience. Let’s stop calling some of them virtual just because participants are not all in the same physical room. Let’s start thinking about all interactions as actual. Let’s frame online interactions altogether differently. So to all of you involved in eLearning, I’d like to ask you to join me with a change in our language. Yet, by speaking this way, we end up perpetuating the barriers to our own work by belittling the online experience. There are times we may find ourselves agreeing with a negative perception just to ease the process or joining in the lament of interaction happening "virtually", or not in-person. And the language we use plays a large role in this process! How This Can Actually ChangeĮven for ourselves, as eLearning professionals, it’s good to examine the perceptions we have, and/or the ways we may perpetuate negative perceptions of online interactions in our discourse. For these reluctant collaborators, I’ve found that the task before my team is not just to develop the course, product or environment but also to help change perceptions of online experiences. I have found that there are just as many people excited to engage in this work as there are people who are not at all thrilled with the prospect. Personally, I have worked with experts from many fields to deliver numerous online trainings and to create spaces for interaction. ![]() Indeed, shaping a friendly perception towards online education is helpful in all sectors, not just higher ed. ![]() Within higher education, for example, studies are showing that just fostering faculty’s acceptance of online courses is a critical factor to their success. The perception of technology can be just as strong (or even stronger) a barrier to the task of creating online content. By conceptualizing online products or events as not-actual, the eLearning team can face the uphill battle of having to convince their own stakeholders, Subject Matter Experts, or other contributors that the result will be meaningful and worthy of the effort. This unintentional connotation can make the job of developing and delivering meaningful online experiences even more difficult and at times near impossible. When online interactions are called "virtual", they enter our mental framework as not actual. Online interactions can be perceived as lesser versions of in-person interactions, lamentable adaptations of in-person events, or poor substitutes for "real" engagement. How The Specific Confusion Complicates Professionals' JobĪs an online learning producer, I often deal with the unfortunate perception that comes with calling online interactions virtual. Without necessarily meaning to (though, perhaps, some do mean it), when we say something is virtual, we are also saying that it is essentially not actual. One that is best understood when we consider that the antonym to virtual is "actual". Yet, there is another meaning to the word. Understood this way, "virtual" seems an appropriate distinction from in-person events, engagements, and interactions. We use it to define an interaction that does not take place in an in-person physical environment. In common use, when we use the word "virtual", we tend to mean online, that is through a computer or device. In online education, we talk about virtual classes, virtual schools, virtual conferences, etc. In the workplace, we often talk about having virtual meetings or virtual events. Equity:Įquity considers longstanding imbalances in transit service in metro Atlanta, while also factoring in the ways that expanded rail transit will help address the broader causes of ongoing injustices. It considers the corridors identified in Atlanta City Design as growth areas, where large transit infrastructure could be more easily accommodated. Growth considers the patterns of expansion in Atlanta and the ideal scale of a system to balance Atlanta’s core with the suburbs. ![]() Individual destinations with over 1,000 parking spaces and no current rail service (including Stone Mountain Park, Zoo Atlanta, and Cellairis Amphitheater) emerged as obvious demand centers. Job centers, residential centers, and major tourist destinations are focus areas. Demand:ĭemand considers both existing and potential riders in areas that are currently underserved by rail transit. Three general concepts guided the proposals: 1) Demand, 2) Growth, and 3) Equity. MARTA 2040? The logic behind these ideas is explained below. This proposed system map would create a rail network that accommodates current and new residents in a comprehensive and logical way, leveraging the strength of the existing lines with new connections both within the city and beyond. By 2040, the city is projected to have 1.2 million, in a metro area of 8.2 million, moving the city’s share up to 14 percent. But not only is it a necessary goal, given Atlanta’s growth trends, with the right planning and proposals, transit expansion in Atlanta can begin to correct decades of inequity that continue to plague the city.Ĭurrently, the city of Atlanta has roughly 500,000 people, with the metro area closing in on 6 million the city is just over 8 percent of the total “Atlanta” population. When MARTA CEO Jeffrey Parker announced his $100 billion “moonshot for transit” this past January, it likely struck many as wishful thinking. And continued redevelopment of growing job and residential centers with loyal transit ridership, such as Lakewood, Greenbriar, and South Dekalb, present opportunities for new transit connections in the near term that will only become more costly, and more necessary, the longer they are not implemented. Similarly, integrating rail transit as a central component of the redeveloped Tilford Yard (Bolton) should be a priority, not an afterthought. Much of this proposed infrastructure is at a time-sensitive juncture: a rail connection to southeast Atlanta has an extremely rare opportunity to be seamlessly incorporated into the ongoing redevelopment of the Georgia State Stadium area. In the context of Atlanta’s inner core and outer suburb structure, MARTA’s heavy rail system is particularly well suited to accommodate trips of five to 25 miles, and this scale forms the focus of these proposals. “This proposed system map would create a rail network that accommodates current and new residents in a comprehensive and logical way.” Atlanta residents inherently understand this, due to our traffic, and the issues with transit that shares vehicle lanes, and overwhelmingly requested the city “expand rail transit” as the primary objective in Atlanta’s Transportation Plan. Others are significant new routes that will provide crucial connections to major growth areas-many long underserved-and will be necessary to accommodate the anticipated doubling of the city’s population over the next 25 years, with significant growth throughout the surrounding suburbs as well.Īlthough rail expansion is contentious for its high cost, there is simply no substitute for the efficiency and capacity that fully separated rail offers. Some are long-proposed expansions, both to the heavy rail network and new light rail lines. This proposal presents the kind of critical, equitable and transformative transit investments that MARTA should make to continue thriving over the next 20 years. Like Beltline Rail Now! advocates, Stephens stresses the importance of rail transit to the growing region’s mobility and success in this detailed Letter to the Editor and transit proposal, which includes a compelling visual. That input will help inform a 30-year transportation plan that ARC leaders must deliver to federal government officials by a February deadline, outlining which local projects might deserve grants from the feds. The metro’s 10-county planning agency, Atlanta Regional Commission, is accepting public comments via email until the close of business today (December 13). When it comes to transit, given metro Atlanta’s anticipated population explosion, Stephens says the time to act is now. The more detail you can add here, the less time you’ll waste later. While it’s tempting to dive right into writing the script, it’s a good idea to spend a good portion of time sketching out the plot first. The most important thing is to divide the plot into scenes, then bulk out each scene with extra details – things like story beats (events that happen) and information about specific characters or plot points. It doesn’t really matter which tool you use. Others might use a digital tool, like Trello, Google Docs, Notion, etc. There are lots of different ways to do this. The next step is breaking the story down into all the small pieces and inciting incidents that make up the plot – which some people call a 'beat sheet'. Write your plotīy this point, you should have a pretty clear idea of what your story’s about. ![]() Whoever your characters are, the most important thing is that your audience wants to get to know them, and can empathise with them. You might find it helpful to complete a character profile worksheet when you’re starting to flesh out your characters (you can find these for free online). What’s the central question of your story? What’s it all about? Character development means taking your characters on a transformational journey so that they can answer this question. You’ll probably see some parts that work, and some parts that need a little tweaking before you start writing the finer details of each scene. This stage of the writing process is a chance to look at your entire story and get a feel for how it reads when it’s written down. Anyone who reads it (hopefully a hotshot producer) should learn enough that they start to feel a connection with your characters, and want to see what happens to them. It should also introduce your characters and the general vibe of the story. Your synopsis should give a good picture of your story, including the important ‘beats’ (events) and plot twists. Most importantly, your treatment needs to include your name and contact details. A treatment is a useful thing to show to producers – they might read it to decide whether they want to invest time in reading your entire script. It’s a slightly beefier summary that includes your script’s title, the logline, a list of your main characters, and a mini synopsis. Once your logline’s in the bag, it’s time to write your treatment. If you nail that, you'll be well on your way to taking your feature film to Hollywood. Importantly, you need to show the audience what’s happening, not tell them. Your job is to translate pictures and sounds into words. But it’ll generally start with the hard work and brainpower of one person – in this case, you.īecause films and TV shows are audiovisual mediums, budding scriptwriters need to include all the audio (heard) and visual (seen) parts of a story. It’s usually a team effort, going through oodles of revisions and rewrites, not to mention being nipped ‘n’ tucked by directors, actors, and those in production jobs. Or it can be based on a true story, or something that someone else wrote – like a novel, theatre production, or newspaper article.Ī movie script details all the parts – audio, visual, behaviour, dialogue – that you need to tell a visual story, in a movie or on TV.
